Joy Of Spanish Cooking

Peras al Vino Tinto (Red Wine)

Hola and Happy Valentine’s Day Weekend!

The weekend usually means being able to cook more, and experimenting with new recipes. And with Valentine’s Day, it gives me even more of an excuse!

This dish is very popular in Spain, the name being “Peras al Vino Tinto”, or Pears in Red Wine. It is perfect for Valentine’s Day. The pears take on a beautiful red color, and who doesn’t like red wine?! Plus it has a light and refreshing flavor.

This recipe is also great for dinner guests. You can make as many as you want, and you can also make them ahead of time.  I never like cooking while I’m trying to entertain at the same time.

If you are looking for a great dessert recipe, especially for Valentine’s  Day, give it a shot and surprise your significant other!

The recipe is for 4, but you can easily adjust the ingredients to make any quantity.  The pears should be ripe, but firm. So, not too ripe. Also, make sure the stems are still attached.

I served the pears with vanilla ice cream and a gravy boat with the extra red wine sauce.

Ingredients (for 4 people or up to 8 pears):

  • 4 pears
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 bottle wine
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • the peel of 1 orange

Pour the wine, sugar, orange zest and cinnamon into a pot on medium-low heat and stir.

Meanwhile, peel the pears and cut the bottom of the pears flat so the pear stays upright.

Add the pears to the pot, put the lid on and leave them in there for 30 to 40 minutes. Move the pears once in a while to make sure that every part of the pear gets poached.

After 30- 40 minutes, check with a toothpick. If the pears are soft, remove them to a plate. If the pears are not soft, cook for an additional 10 minutes or until soft. If the pears are done, remove the orange peel and the cinnamon stick.

With the pears on a plate, and the wine simmering on medium-high, let the wine reduce down for about 15 minutes.

Once the wine is reduced, turn the heat off and add the pears.

You can serve this dish hot or cold. I serve the pears cold and I warmed up the wine. I served the pears on a plate and then generously poured the wine on top. The combination between cold and warm makes it even more interesting.

Have a good weekend!  Happy Valentine’s Day!

Bon profit!
