Palmiers de Jamón y Queso (Ham and Cheese)

I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Tomorrow is a special day in Spain. It is the dia de la Hispanidad. Not just in Spain, it is also celebrated in other hispanic cultures as a national day. The origin of this holiday comes from 1492, when Christopher Columbus arrived in America. It was the first encounter between Europeans and American and changed the respective cultures forever.

Tomorrow in Spain,  there is a big parade in Madrid (the capital),with lots of cultural activities happening in the streets. Because it’s a holiday in Spain, it’s also a  great excuse to get together with your family and friends and share a nice meal. Something we like to do a lot!  For today, I made a very easy tapa good for sharing. It is a savory tapa called Palemeras de Jamon y Queso and it translates to ham and cheese palmiers. Originating from France, it is traditionally served as a sweet appetizer. In Spain, it is served both sweet and savory.

Ingredients for 20-25 palmiers:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (homemade or from the store. You can get great puff pastry from your supermarket frozen food section, and I think it’s easier and just as good.)
  • 6 thin slices of ham (good quality)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese (grated or sliced) to cover the dough.
  • egg

Preaheat the oven to 390F.

  • Sprinkle the cheese over the dough. Add the ham slices. 1p 2p
  • Gently fold one long edge until it meets the center, then do the same with the opposite edge, so that the two folds meet in the ­middle.  Press throughout lightly to stick the pastry folds together. Repeat this process again. Fold one half of a long edge to the center, then repeat with the second long edge, again making them meet in the middle. Press the pastry again. (See photos)

  • With a sharp knife, slice about 1 inch thick pieces and arrange on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet (or sheets).7p

  • Brush with egg wash.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Best served warm but also good at room temperature.
